Abstract

This paper explores the transformative effects of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) on the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), situated at the intersection of Management Information Systems and Software Engineering. By synthesizing recent literature, the study demonstrates that AI tools have evolved from simple code autocompletion to acting as Agentic AI capable of managing complex workflows. However, this transition is not without friction; critical challenges such as “hallucination,” security vulnerabilities, and organizational resistance in enterprise environments persist. The paper critically analyzes the disruption of workforce hierarchies, specifically the “Junior Developer Paradox,” and argues that the role of the software engineer is shifting from a “code writer” to an “AI System Orchestrator.” Consequently, future professionals must cultivate strong governance frameworks and architectural skills to effectively manage AI-generated technical debt.

1. Introduction

The software development industry is currently undergoing a paradigm shift comparable to the transition from Waterfall to Agile methodologies. This third wave, often termed “AI-Augmented Development,” is characterized by the deep integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) into every stage of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC). Historically, the human capacity to write and debug syntax has been a primary bottleneck in software production. However, recent empirical evidence suggests that this constraint is increasingly being reduced through AI-assisted development tools. A controlled study conducted by GitHub reports that developers using AI-assisted coding tools completed tasks up to 55% faster than control groups. In parallel, an industry analysis by McKinsey & Company (2023) estimates that generative AI could automate approximately 20–30% of current software development tasks. These findings indicate that generative AI may represent more than incremental tooling improvement and instead point toward a structural shift in software production practices.
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the relationship between Management Information Systems (MIS), Software Engineering, and Artificial Intelligence. It argues that tools like GitHub Copilot and autonomous agents are not merely productivity enhancers but strategic disruptors that necessitate a reevaluation of traditional SDLC phases. The paper first presents a background of scientific research, contrasting the optimistic views on productivity with critical perspectives on adoption barriers. It then discusses the operational shift towards Prompt-Driven Development and concludes with original insights regarding the necessity of “AI Governance” and orchestration skills in the modern workforce.

2. Background: Literature and Critical Perspectives

The intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Software Engineering (SE) has been a subject of increasing academic interest. The literature generally categorizes the impact of these technologies into three main areas: productivity enhancement, the transformation of requirements engineering, and the critical risks associated with adoption.

2.1. Productivity and Code Generation

A significant portion of recent research focuses on the efficiency gains provided by GenAI tools. Minkiewicz (2024), in a report for the Department of Homeland Security, argues that GenAI effectively “fills gaps” in the SDLC by accelerating solution delivery and reducing manual effort. The study highlights that GenAI is particularly effective in generating “boilerplate” code, potentially reducing coding time by significant margins. Similarly, Hou et al. (2024) find that developers utilize these tools for complex tasks such as understanding new libraries and legacy code refactoring.

2.2. Requirements Engineering and Design

Beyond coding, the literature indicates a shift towards AI-augmented requirements engineering. Recent studies (e.g., Frontiers in Computer Science, 2025) demonstrate that LLMs excel in translating ambiguous natural language user requirements into formal technical specifications. This capability addresses the communication gap between business stakeholders and technical teams, a core concern of MIS.

2.3. Critical Counter-Narratives: Risks and Barriers

While productivity gains are evident, a critical segment of the literature highlights the limitations of AI adoption.

Hallucination and Security: Fan et al. (2023) identify “hallucination”—the generation of plausible but incorrect code—as a critical barrier. In enterprise environments, this poses severe security risks, as AI may inadvertently introduce vulnerabilities or suggest non-existent dependencies that attackers can exploit (supply chain attacks).
Economic and Social Barriers: Contrary to the “total automation” narrative, large enterprises face significant friction in adopting these tools due to data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR) and the complexity of legacy systems. AI models trained on public data may not effectively navigate proprietary, undocumented legacy codebases, limiting their utility in banking or healthcare sectors.
Data Privacy and IP Integrity: Beyond regulatory compliance, the risk of Intellectual Property (IP) leakage remains a primary deterrent. A notable risk involves the inadvertent exposure of proprietary logic when developers input sensitive snippets into public LLMs for debugging—a phenomenon witnessed in high-profile cases like the Samsung source code leak. Furthermore, the potential for ‘data poisoning’ or the reuse of enterprise secrets in the model’s future global training sets creates a significant trust gap in highly regulated sectors.

3. The Shift from Coding to Orchestration

The integration of Generative AI into software engineering is reshaping the core activities of the profession. This section clarifies the key concepts driving this shift.

3.1. From Coding to “Prompt-Driven Development”

The industry is witnessing the rise of Prompt-Driven Development, a methodology where natural language prompts replace manual syntax generation as the primary input mechanism. In this paradigm, the developer’s skill set shifts from memorizing standard libraries to formulating precise logical constraints in natural language. The bottleneck moves from writing code to reviewing code, as developers must verify the output of AI models rather than creating it from scratch.

3.2. The Rise of “Agentic AI”

We are witnessing a transition from passive assistants to Agentic AI. Unlike standard LLMs that respond to a single query, Agentic AI is defined as a system capable of autonomous, multi-step reasoning, tool usage, and self-correction to achieve a high-level goal.
• Example: Instead of asking a chatbot to “write a SQL query,” a developer tasks an AI Agent to “Analyze the database schema, identify slow queries, optimize indexes, and deploy the changes to the staging environment.” The agent autonomously plans, executes, and validates these steps. This transition is not merely theoretical. Recent benchmarks such as SWE-bench demonstrate that LLM-based agents can autonomously resolve a non-trivial percentage of real GitHub issues, suggesting measurable progress toward multi-step problem solving.
Furthermore, the emergence of commercial systems such as Cognition Labs’s Devin and open-source agent frameworks like LangChain indicates a broader movement toward multi-step autonomous workflows. By demonstrating the ability to independently navigate file systems and execute terminal commands to resolve issues, these systems reinforce the argument that the developer’s primary value is gradually shifting from ‘syntax generation’ to ‘high-level intent orchestration’.

3.3. The “Junior Developer Paradox”

A critical implication of this automation is the organizational disruption known as the “Junior Developer Paradox.” Traditionally, junior engineers learned by writing simple boilerplate code. If AI agents take over these tasks, entry-level roles may diminish. This creates a long-term risk of “deskilling,” where the industry fails to train enough senior engineers capable of debugging the complex systems that AI creates.
To mitigate this deskilling risk, academic institutions and corporate training programs must pivot from ‘syntax-heavy’ curricula to ‘verification-centric’ models. The focus of junior education should shift toward ‘Reverse Mentoring’ and ‘Code Auditing’ skills, where the learner is taught to evaluate the security and efficiency of AI-generated solutions rather than just generating them.

4. Results & Discussion: A Perspective

4.1. Moving Up the Abstraction Ladder

The relationship between my field and AI can be described as a leap in abstraction. Just as the industry moved from Assembly to High-Level Languages, we are now moving to orchestration. The results suggest that AI does not replace the engineer but abstracts away the syntax.

4.2. Organizational Impact: Governance and Ethics

From my perspective, the deployment of AI in SDLC requires robust Algorithmic Governance. • Liability and Audit: If an AI agent introduces a bug that causes a financial loss, who is liable? Companies must establish strict audit trails for AI-generated code.
• Responsible AI Policies: Organizations need “Human-in-the-loop” policies where critical architectural decisions and security reviews cannot be fully delegated to AI. The “Black Box” nature of some AI models clashes with the enterprise need for explainability.

4.3. The “AI Orchestrator”

Based on the analysis, I argue that the future software engineer will evolve into an AI System Orchestrator. This role involves:

  1. Strategic Decomposition: Breaking down complex business problems into sub-tasks that specific AI agents can handle.
  2. Quality Assurance: acting as the “Editor-in-Chief” for AI-generated code.
  3. System Thinking: Understanding how disparate AI-generated modules integrate into a cohesive, secure, and scalable architecture.
    In conclusion, while AI agents offer unprecedented efficiency, they demand a higher caliber of human oversight. The competitive advantage of the future MIS graduate lies not in coding speed, but in the ability to govern, verify, and orchestrate intelligent systems.
